Kymátika Sounds has released PTone, a free sample library for the Audiomodern Soundbox virtual instrument, and it’s available as a pay-what-you-want download (starting at $0) for a limited time.
The developer came across an old Casio keyboard at a flea market in Poland, discovered it was still working perfectly, and decided to turn it into a virtual instrument.
However, that’s not the whole story. Instead of sampling the Casio directly, the keyboard was recorded through its built-in speaker using high-quality microphones, preamps, and compressors. From there, the sounds were further shaped with a mix of analog pedals and digital effects.
So what we’re getting here is a somewhat fancier version of the original. Some of the presets stay true to the toy keyboard’s character, but you’ll also find some more polished and modern-sounding tones in the library.
PTone includes 42 presets that blend lo-fi nostalgia with more modern sound design touches. There’s a lot to choose from here, and you can use the sounds in anything from ambient and lo-fi to pop, trap, experimental, or cinematic work.
I also like that the library doesn’t try to impress with hundreds of presets, but instead focuses on a carefully curated set of ready-to-use sounds.
PTone runs inside Audiomodern Soundbox, which is an important part of the story here.
Soundbox is a fully featured sampler and virtual instrument platform, and the good news is that you don’t need to buy anything to use PTone. Audiomodern offers a free Soundbox player for Windows, macOS, Linux, and iPadOS that can load and play any Soundbox instrument, including third-party libraries like this one.
The free Soundbox engine gives you access to the full playback features, including multilayer instruments, effects, modulation, MPE support, and an intuitive browser with tags for fast sound discovery.
You only need a paid Soundbox instrument if you want to unlock the sample and mapping editor for building your own libraries from scratch. For playing and tweaking existing libraries, the free version is more than enough.
Soundbox was recently updated to version 1.2, introducing a new chord generator. This feature lets you turn single notes into full chords using a dedicated chord tab, complete with key and scale selection, chord types, inversions, velocity balancing, strum timing, and even smooth chord bending when notes overlap.
It’s a lovely addition that works especially well with characterful sounds like those found in PTone.
PTone is currently available as a pay-what-you-want download, with a suggested price of €8, but you can enter zero to get it for free or choose a higher amount to support the developer.
Soundbox is available as VST3, AU, AAX, AUv3, and standalone on Windows, macOS, Linux, and iPadOS, with the free player supporting all Soundbox instruments.
