ROYAL 2 is part of UJAM’s Virtual Bassist series. It shares the same idea as their other bassist and drummer instruments, giving you a session-ready bassist in your DAW. It’s instantly playable and surprisingly flexible while maintaining a simple, beginner-friendly workflow.
If you’ve used other UJAM instruments before, you already know what to expect. The sound is excellent (and it’s easy to make the mistake of expecting less, given the price and the design), and the interface is optimized for working fast rather than getting lost in the nuances of bass guitar setup.
Their approach reminds me of the instruments bundled with GarageBand, but with noticeably better sound quality and more flexibility. You get that same “just start playing” vibe, except the tones here are far more polished and usable in a finished track.
I’d say ROYAL 2 is aimed squarely at pop rock, altough you can also fit it into indie and singer-songwriter type projects. You get a massive selection of electric bass lines that sit effortlessly in the mix, and you can adjust the tone and articulations to fit your project.
The interface is very beginner-friendly, but there’s still plenty to tweak if you want. You can adjust the character from soft to hard, switch between amp styles, dial in drive, and choose between neck or bridge pickups.
There’s also a built-in compressor and a simple one-knob EQ that moves from vintage to modern tones. The modern setting pushes the subs and mids a bit harder, while vintage keeps things flatter and more restrained.
UJAM also includes several Finisher multi-effect presets that add movement, modulation, or extra polish to your bass sound. Drop D tuning is supported, and you can browse through the included phrases and play them directly from your MIDI keyboard.
ROYAL 2 works in two modes. Player Mode simulates working with a session bassist, triggering phrases that automatically follow your song’s key and chords. Instrument Mode turns ROYAL 2 into a more traditional virtual instrument, letting you play notes manually, complete with articulations like slides and dead notes.

I’ve used VEA myself on a couple of hip-hop projects earlier this year, and it’s surprisingly effective for quick vocal cleanup.
