This Christmas, Dutch electronic music producer Legowelt is spreading festive joy by releasing a free sample pack he created with his trusty Prophet 600.
You can download the free pack from Legowelt’s website (via WeTransfer) with no sign-up or fuss.
The pack includes 386 WAV files (16-bit mono), including basses, pads, chords, strings, and more.
The Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 might not be a flagship synth for the iconic manufacturer, but it does have something like cult status in certain circles.
Electronic music producers love the Prophet 600 for its aggressive and somewhat unrefined character, and picking up a second-hand unit will still cost a fair bit.
The basses in this free sample pack might highlight what the Prophet 600 does best for producers making techno, acid, or any hard-hitting dancefloor tracks.
The bass samples have that unapologetic rawness that you hear all over Legowelt’s music.
Despite its aggressive character, the Prophet 600 produced some beautiful, brassy pads that are ideal for any variation of electro music.
The pads and Videochord samples are my favorites; they both have a sort of dreamy quality that works well as a featured element or a bed for something else.
The pack also includes a few melodic samples.
Legowelt is providing the pack for free, but if you want to support his work, there are several ways to do so, detailed on his website.
Legowelt wears many hats; as well as being a prolific electronic music producer, he’s a composer, sound designer, visual artist, and performer.
Legowelt tours quite extensively, but if you can’t get to a show, there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing the Dutch master at work (check out his Boiler Room set in Santiago).
You’ll also find a few tutorials and masterclass videos that are worth watching.
I think the most impressive thing about Legowelt’s work is that his passion for creating and sharing music has never faded.
After decades in the studio and on the stage, he’s still as enthusiastic about synths and sound as ever, and it’s inspiring to see such a hardworking musician.
