Turnt Plugins and Epica Audio have both released free one-knob audio effects, and while they come from different developers, the idea behind them is surprisingly similar.
If you’re into ultra-simple plugins that aim to enhance your sound with a single control, this article is for you. If not, feel free to skip it and save yourself a few minutes.
I’m grouping these two together because they are both designed for someone who wants to add some high-frequency polish to their audio with minimal tweaking.
Pretty Pretty Princess Sparkle
First up is Pretty Pretty Princess Sparkle from Turnt Plugins. Yes, the name is ridiculous, and yes, that’s intentional. The plugin features a cute interface covered in childlike doodles, which I found awesome (I’ve been doodling nonstop with my kid lately, so this one somehow hits home).
Behind the playful design is a simple concept I described earlier: turn one knob and add sparkle to your audio.
The plugin brightens your sound by enhancing the upper frequencies, adding air and a bit of saturation without sounding harsh. It’s level-matched, so you’re encouraged to trust your ears rather than being fooled by loudness.
I find it works best when you want a gentle lift in the highs, especially on vocals. It’s also useful on buses that feel a bit dull.
Pretty Pretty Princess Sparkle is permanently free. You just add it to your cart on the Turnt Plugins website and complete the checkout process for €0. Turnt Plugins also offers paid plugins starting at $15, but this is currently their only freebie.
Epica Audio Hi-Fi
The second plugin is Hi-Fi from Epica Audio, which takes a very similar but also slightly different approach.
The interface isn’t my favorite, to be honest. The main knob only occupies a small part of the GUI, and there’s another visible knob that isn’t actually usable, which feels a bit odd. Still, once you get past the visuals, the plugin does deliver what it promises.
Hi-Fi focuses on adding clarity and presence with a single dry/wet control. Compared to the Turnt Plugins release, this one feels more centered around the mids, with a broader enhancement that works nicely on drums and guitars.
Hi-Fi is free only until December 31st, so that’s worth noting. You can download it after entering your email address on Epica Audio’s website.
Both plugins are available for macOS and Windows. Pretty Pretty Princess Sparkle comes in AU and VST3 formats, while Hi-Fi is available in VST, AU, and AAX formats and works in all major DAWs.
