Epica Audio (not to be confused with Erica Synths) offers the Lo-Fi plugin, a one-knob effect for macOS and Windows, for free until November 30th, 2025.
This one is about as simple as an audio tool gets, but despite the minimal interface, it can be useful if you’re after quick-and-dirty character shaping. If you want something more detailed and tape-like, check out our free BPB Dirty VHS plugin.
Lo-Fi gives you a single control: a dry/wet knob ranging from 0 to 100%. That’s it.
You’re basically limited to choosing how intense you want the lo-fi treatment to be, and you can’t fine-tune any of its elements. That said, the mix knob lets you do anything from a gentle bit of grit to a full-on “tiny radio speaker” tone.
Even though there’s a cassette graphic on the panel, I didn’t hear any obvious tape wobble or pitch drift. What is noticeable is a blend of filtering and saturation: some low-pass, some high-pass, a little distortion, and a general narrowing of the sound.
But if I had to describe it in two words, the result is very much that classic “radio effect.” And you can adjust its intensity with a single knob, which is great.
Because of that, Lo-Fi fits quite well into a bunch of everyday production scenarios. For example, if you want to do the classic pop trick where you make a vocal sound thin and distant before a chorus drop, this gets you there instantly.
It also works nicely on drum loops if you want that crunchy, lo-fi sample-pack kind of vibe without using multiple plugins. And if you want to use the lo-fi effect to add a bit of movement and energy before a build-up, just automate the mix knob and you’re done.
The plugin’s interface is resizable, which is a bit funny because that won’t matter much with a single control. But the main oddity is its layout itself: the knob is tiny compared to the rest of the panel. Personally, I’d find a huge knob more satisfying, but functionally it’s perfectly fine.
You can grab Lo-Fi for free on Epica Audio’s website until November 30th, 2025. A name and email address are required to download.
The plugin runs on macOS (High Sierra and above) and Windows 10+, and it comes in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
