We’ve covered several of DAWJunkie’s releases here at BPB before, and now they’re back with a new freebie for a limited time: Slurpy Jr. Stereo Phase Synth for macOS and Windows in VST and AU formats.
First off, I’ll go out on a limb and say that the name “Slurpy Jr.” might be a tad polarizing, depending on your taste. I personally appreciate off-kilter humor, so it didn’t scare me away.
The uncanny ’90s design of DAWJunkie was initially a bigger turn-off, but the sound and concept intrigued me nonetheless, which is always the most important thing.
I bet “slurpy” is an onomatopoeia, because this synth can make anything from sweeping drones to slurping, gurgling, stomach-upsetting frog core-like sounds.
This means that the synth is ideal for those wanting anything between dynamic pads and leads to an all-out sound design bonanza.
The main feature of this plugin is its ability to create complex, evolving sounds full of movement in a simple, uncluttered interface.
You have a preset menu and volume control at the top, and the main UI is two panels of knobs.
The top panel has a waveform parameter, Unison, Detune, ADSR control, and a filter. The bottom panel is where the Slurp really takes off with the phase parameters.
There’s a top and bottom limit control for the phase action, combined with a knob to dial in the overall speed.
Go from subtle movement to crazy lasers and bubbles.
In the bottom right, we have reverb, delay, and distortion effects with separate mix control to create additional depth, space, and texture. That’s it!
I really like the simplicity of this plugin. Endless complexity and hours of menu diving can be a detriment to actual creativity. Having tools with a very limited interface yet many sonic possibilities is, all things considered, probably a good thing.
Slurpy Jr. can create cool pads that infuse your production with movement and interest, but it could also make for a gritty lead synth. If you want to go even further, Slurpy Jr. could also work as a starting point for extreme sound mangling, where the timbre and width of the phase action can excite complex effect chains.
If this sounds interesting, be sure to grab the plugin immediately, as I’m unsure how long the offer will last. And when we’re talking about limited-time deals, check out the cool Matra delay effect by Karanyi Sound.
