Ocean Swift releases Sample Tester, a FREE sampling tool for Native Instruments Kontakt Player.
Ocean Swift’s Sample Tester might be the most aptly-named release we’ve ever come across for Kontakt Player.
Although it’s an incredibly easy-to-use tool, there’s more to Sample Tester than sample playback, of course.
It provides a fast and straightforward way to hear and play samples polyphonically across the keyboard.
You can drag and drop samples straight into the testing tool, and Sample Tester will immediately provide MIR data (Music Information Retrieval), including pitch, tune fix, peak, RMS, and loudness values.
The pitch value represents the fundamental pitch of the entire sample, which isn’t always exact in real-time.
However, the Tune Fix function alters the sample’s pitch slightly, where needed, to produce more accurate results when you play any particular note.
The Sample Tester will also display the instrument type detected.
If, like most people around here, I’m sure, you have samples upon samples upon samples, in folders that time forgot, Ocean Swift’s new testing tool could provide the motivation to get your samples in order.
One of the reasons we might collect specific samples (besides the fact that we can’t stop) is that they would be the perfect foundation for a new instrument.
The results aren’t always as expected, which is where Sample Tester can be a time-saver.
Sample Tester lets you audition samples as polyphonic instruments instantly, and get rid of any samples that just don’t work as we hoped.
More importantly, we can curate collections that are ideal for percussive, textural, or melodic instruments.
The developer notes that Sample Tester isn’t an instrument and therefore shouldn’t be expected to produce the most polished final results; however, it does help us identify when something will sound great.
We can also start shaping a future instrument by setting the low/high keys and using the built-in envelope. One of the best time-saving features is that the envelope has some presets to quickly audition samples for a particular type of instrument, including Perc, Bell, Piano, Lead, and Pad.
Sample Tester is an interesting new tool that runs in the free Kontakt Player. Ocean Swift provides a Native Access serial number upon checkout.
I know Native Access isn’t everyone’s favorite thing, but you can also add iZotope’s Vocal Synth 2 to your collection with a massive 91% discount at Plugin Boutique (get it for €20.63 – usually €251). The offer is only valid throughout October 2025.
