Remaincalm releases Gloss, a FREE “tiny enhancer” plugin for macOS and Windows.
Gloss is a simple plugin that adds sheen, space, and texture to any sound. It works particularly well on keys (such as synths and electric pianos), but it’s also a handy way to enhance guitars or vocals.
If you need a new synth sound to run through Gloss, consider UJAM Usynth Core, which is available for just $6.13 at Plugin Boutique. Your purchase will include a free copy of UVI ReLayer (the offer ends on September 30, 2025).
The 70s-inspired plugin features an ensemble chorus effect that allows you to crossfade between two modelled string synth chorus circuits. It also features a one-knob reverb and a “Weird Mono” mode that delivers a phaser or rotary-like effect.
The chorus and reverb effects are lite versions of modules that come from Remaincalm’s flagship modulation plugin, Gossamer.
Gloss is free to download in AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
With just five control knobs, Gloss is easy to use and creates an immediate vintage vibe.
The Chorus effect includes a Mode knob to crossfade between the two distinct models and a Tone control.
The Reverb knob takes you through various reverb parameters from a medium-sized room to a chorused, synthetic cathedral.
There’s also a Grit control that adjusts the saturation and noise of the chorus effect. The straightforward interface displays explainer text whenever you hover over any control.
The two modelled chorus circuits are said to derive from a rare Japanese flagship synth and an early ’70s European circuit.
I hope the rare Japanese flagship synth is the Multivox/Hillwood MX-3000, as it’s a synth that doesn’t pop up very often. If you can find a hardware unit in decent condition, you might expect to pay around $4000, so any of that vintage character in plugin form is welcome.
A reasonable supposition for the European circuit could be the Eminent Solina String Ensemble, manufactured by Eminent BV in the Netherlands, and later licensed and sold as the Arp Solina in the US.
Gloss includes a decent preset bank with some lovely settings to get you started.
It adds that little bit extra to synths and keys that lack an authentic vintage character, and works well on other sources as well.
