Discreet Signals has released 8TT, a free multiband compressor plugin for Windows and macOS that takes the popular OTT compression concept into new territory.
If you’re familiar with Xfer Records’ classic OTT plugin, you already know the appeal: upward and downward compression in a multiband format that makes flat sounds punchier, louder, and more in-your-face.
It’s been a staple in electronic music production for years, especially for sculpting aggressive basses, plucks, and hard-hitting drums.
What sets 8TT apart from the original OTT and its clones, which we covered in the past, like Cramit and Dynastia, is its extended band control.
Instead of the standard three bands, 8TT offers up to eight. That means way more precision in tailoring your compression curve across the frequency spectrum, but also a bit more complexity.
That said, it’s good to know that if eight bands feel like overkill, you can scale it down to as few as one. You can set this up in the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner of the interface.
Despite the added flexibility, the plugin is very user-friendly. The main controls (Input, Down, Up, Mix, and Output) are laid out across the bottom, with a clean central section that handles band gain, range, and compression ratios.
At first glance, the minimalist design might feel a little too stripped down, but once you get the hang of the interface, it’s quick to navigate.
Compression is handled with a simple drag-and-draw control setup that lets you adjust and monitor the gain reduction and balance for each band. It’s a modern take on the OTT-style workflow, and it really feels more user-friendly than the original.
8TT also includes a solid selection of presets for typical use cases, from drum bus shaping to synth enhancement. There’s even a randomizer if you want to stumble across happy accidents, and you can save your own presets for future use.
A few extra goodies are tucked into the side menu, including oversampling, an output limiter, and sidechain input. You can even change the GUI color and resize the interface by dragging the bottom-right corner.
You’ll need to register for a free account on the developer’s website and complete a free checkout process to get a license. An internet connection is required for activation, and I couldn’t find any option for offline activation.
8TT is available in VST3 and AU formats for macOS and Windows.
