About Gorilla Drive
I’ve spent some time with Gorilla Drive (it’s the first plugin Safari Pedals ever released) and loved the distortion range it provides with just a few simple controls.
Another huge plus is the auto-gain feature that lets you dial in the perfect amount of distortion without messing with volume adjustments.
It’s a silky-smooth overdrive effect modeled after vintage Germanium circuits. The interface mimics a guitar pedal, complete with chunky knobs and cool design elements that match the overdrive vibe.
What makes Gorilla Drive stand out for me isn’t so much the distortion itself, but the way it’s implemented for maximum ease of use.
The blend knob lets you mix in saturation in parallel, which is super neat for subtly warming up a signal without overpowering it. Then there’s the Tone Tilt EQ, a clever one-knob filter that smoothly transitions from deep low-end saturation to bright highs.
The biggest workflow highlight, for me, is the Auto Gain feature. It automatically adjusts the output level in response to input drive changes, keeping your signal at a consistent level.
This might seem minor, but it’s a workflow lifesaver, especially when you’re in a hurry. It lets you maintain mix balance and audition saturation flavors without constant volume readjustments.
The plugin also includes a handy phase-flip button, which is particularly useful when layering distorted and clean signals.
I found it works very well on room mics and kick drums. It adds a controlled amount of subharmonic energy that really helps round the kick drum. It also handles bass distortion and brings out the grit without losing the weight.
