e-instruments releases Desolate Guitars Fragment, a FREE vintage chime guitar instrument for Kontakt Player
Desolate Guitars Fragment is the lite version of the premium Desolate Guitars library (€149), and it’s available to download for free.
You’ll need Kontakt Player 7.6.1 or higher, which is also free.
The primary difference between the two versions is that the paid product features a full preset bank and more extensive customization options, whereas the free version offers only the Chime Guitar preset.
Despite being limited to a single preset and lacking extensive customization options, Desolate Guitars Fragment offers a few very cool features that allow you to tweak the sound.
If you’re looking for more free guitar sounds, check out Bridge Guitar; it’s part of the free Vaults series by The Crow Hill Company.
The Chime Guitar sound comes from a 1960s guitar paired with two vintage amplifiers, providing the classic American clean and British chime tones. I believe the featured amps are a Fender Twin Reverb and a Vox AC, but guitarists in the room can feel free to correct me!
One of the first cool features of this instrument is that you can blend the sound of both amps; you’re not limited to a static selection.
This sound, along with these amps, showcases a classic tremolo effect, which you can adjust to suit. The tremolo gives the Chime Guitar preset a lovely textural quality, and it’s a sound that works amazingly well with little effort.
The developer talks about creating cinematic soundscapes, and in that context, letting a single note ring out with that tremolo and reverb will take you a long way.
The reverb is another interesting feature; it’s a nice emulation of a real spring reverb, which lends itself well to the atmospheric quality of letting single notes ring out.
If you don’t want such a wet sound, the Chime Guitar preset is great for sparse melodic lines, deep pedal notes, or even more intricate arpeggios.
If you do play something a little busier, you can use the keyswitch trigger to enter legato mode, which introduces more authentic performance elements like hammer-ons and pull-offs.
Desolate Guitars Fragment offers a pretty distinct sound. While it’s not the most flexible instrument, it will sound fantastic if the words cinematic, atmospheric, or vintage apply to your project. It’s also a good way to preview the full version before you buy.
