Raccoon Audio has released EchoSnack Delay, a creative stereo delay plugin for macOS and Windows.
EchoSnack is the indie developer’s first commercial release after their popular freeware, OctoWah Stew. It instantly got my attention because it looks like a retro 8-bit video game. Not exactly what you’d expect from a typical delay plugin.
But behind the pixel-art charm is a highly capable delay effect designed for producers who want something more than just basic echo repeats.
The star of the show is the Mutate knob. This control adds movement by subtly (or wildly) modulating delay parameters like filter cutoff, modulation depth, and drive amount.
It’s simple to use. You basically double-click any knob with a glowing LED to let Mutate take control. Each linked parameter drifts in its own direction, giving every repeat a unique contour.
The ease of use blew me away here, and it’s surprisingly effective in practice. I had a lot of fun adding this to leads and pads as a subtle layer with plenty of movement.
You also get dual delay lines with optional tempo sync. These can be linked or unlinked to run at different timings for asymmetric stereo effects.
Filters and a tape-style drive stage live inside the feedback loop, so echoes degrade and smear the longer they ring out. The result is a lo-fi delay that feels alive, especially when you start cranking the modulation.
I was originally drawn to EchoSnack because of its bonkers GUI, complete with a character named Kyle who mutates into different “echo snack” variants as you twist the Mutate dial. If you grew up on Commodore 64 video games like me, retro touches like this are hard to resist.
The interface is insanely cool, and you just have to see it in action to fully appreciate it.
But once I got past the eye candy, I found a super usable and fun tool. You can coax standard stereo delays or dive into broken tape territory, and crazy chorus-flange chaos. There’s also a handy time-bump feature for pitch dive effects, and a library of presets to get you started.
One minor downside is that there’s no output level control, and things can get loud when the drive is pushed hard. But it’s just a minor (and easy to remedy with a clipper or limiter) setback to an otherwise fantastic plugin.
