CODA is the creation of Kyle Stemberger, the name behind Haven Audio.
In addition to developing CODA, Kyle creates sample packs, and if you’re into beatmaking, you might want to check out some of his loops and phrases.
Haven Audio labels CODA as a Dynamic Phase Smasher, which sounds pretty aggressive. But, on the contrary, the developer designed CODA to help producers of all levels enhance a mix while minimizing the risk of going too far, which is easily done with traditional dynamics processors like compressors and limiters.
Haven Audio says “Phase-smashing is an audio irregularity that smears the phase information of a sound across a specific frequency, creating otherworldly enhancements to transients without adding extra gain—preserving both the original quality and headroom.”
If that sounds familiar, you might now be thinking of Disperser, the magic all-pass filter by Kilohearts (or even Disburser, the free clone from KiTiK).
Disperser is still relatively expensive at times, so another free alternative is always welcome.
Through rotating the phase of a signal at a selected frequency, an audio artifact is produced that impacts the character of the transients.
CODA has just two knobs: Amount and Focus.
The Amount knob adjusts the number of active all-pass filters (max 60 stacked). You can drag the marker across the frequency spectrum to dictate where the filters are applied.
The Focus knob acts similarly to the Q factor on an EQ, and adds a resonance-like impact without becoming too harsh.
Where you position the CODA effect in the frequency spectrum can achieve anything from simple clarity enhancements to crisper, punchier transients and custom sound design.
Pushing either the Amount or Focus knob more than a few notches is where you begin to venture into sound design territory, and that makes CODA a simple but flexible tool.
CODA is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
