Michelle Williams has admitted that she still carries “trauma” from falling on a 2004 episode of 106 & Park.
The singer and actor, who is currently starring in Broadway’s Death Becomes Her, recounted the moment during the July 29 episode of her podcast Checking In With Michelle Williams, after reuniting with Destiny’s Child members Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland during the final show of the Cowboy Carter Tour last week in Las Vegas.
Around the 19-minute mark of the episode, Williams talked about rehearsing for the surprise appearance and said that if she fell on the stage stairs that she wouldn’t “live that down for the next 20 years.”
“I was trying to stay focused because y’all know I still have trauma from falling on 106 & Park,” Williams said. “I need y’all to be my therapist about that, too. Because every time I perform with the girls, it’s in my head: ‘Do not fall, do not fall, do not fall.'”
Williams told stylist Ty Hunter that the fringe on her pants needed to be trimmed off, which helped her to avoid a spill. The singer also expressed that steps “frighten” her.
“So that’s probably the only thing I didn’t like was that I didn’t trust the steps,” she said. “Beyoncé, you go girl. But then, Beyoncé walked them steps all summer. She’s familiar with those steps.”
“I’m not at home on the Cowboy Carter stage,” Williams continued, adding that they did “everything wardrobe-wise to ensure that what happened on 106 & Park did not happen on this Cowboy Carter stage.”
Of course, the infamous moment that Williams referred to was Destiny’s Child performing “Soldier” on the former music video countdown. As the song began, Williams toppled to the floor, getting back into formation as Beyoncé and Rowland continued the performance.
Thankfully for Williams, the DC3 reunion in Vegas went without a hitch. The trio sang “Lose My Breath” and “Bootylicious” to a very excited sold-out crowd at Allegiant Stadium.
