Echo Sound Works offers ESW Kalimba, a free sample-based virtual instrument for macOS and Windows.
This one isn’t exactly new. It was released a couple of years ago, but I noticed we haven’t featured it in the news back then. So, here’s an article for those BPB readers who still haven’t downloaded this excellent free kalimba.
ESW Kalimba is more than just another sampled kalimba plugin. This one comes with a surprisingly flexible sound design engine that sets it apart from most free options out there.
If you’ve been following BPB lately, you’ll know we’ve covered a bunch of free kalimba plugins over the years. Most of those were straightforward, like Splash Sound Kalimba and OSC Audio Kalimba Keys.
These are great for sketching ideas, but also limited to a handful of static samples. ESW Kalimba breaks that mold by offering layered synthesis, some pretty useful effects, all packed in an intuitive interface.
At its core, ESW Kalimba is built around two deeply sampled kalimbas. But what makes it special is the hybrid oscillator section, which lets you blend those natural tones with layered, processed versions.
You can customize your own kalimba timbre from scratch, or stack up to eight pre-processed layers to create something truly unique.
The effects section includes EQ, reverb (with ten algorithms), compression, delay, and a lo-fi control (and I love lo-fi effects on acoustic instruments).
These tools are all neatly compartmentalized in the UI, which avoids clutter and keeps the workflow quick. Each panel—Oscillators, Layers, and Effects—has its own space, so navigating the plugin feels smooth.
You also get 20 hand-crafted presets to speed up the music-making workflow if you’re in a hurry. You can use them as-is or tweak each sound into something entirely different.
The download process is hassle-free as it gets. No registration needed. Just head to the Echo Sound Works website and grab the direct download.
Plus, you will probably catch a $5 discount pop-up when visiting the ESW website for the first time. That’s valid for 48 hours, which is a nice bonus if you’re thinking about grabbing something else from their shop.
ESW Kalimba is definitely one of the more creative free kalimbas we’ve seen yet. It’s a must if you’re producing lo-fi music, but I can also see it used for ambient, cinematic, or even indie pop music.
ESW Kalimba is compatible with any DAW that supports VST2, VST3, or AU plugins (excluding Pro Tools). It runs natively on Apple Silicon and requires a 64-bit system—macOS 10.9 or later, or Windows 10 and up. The plugin download is around 203 MB for Mac and 163 MB for PC.
