Software has offered the ReContour waveshaping compressor plugin as a free download while supplies last. At the time of writing, there are still over 1,000 free licenses available.
ReContour usually sells for $49.99, but you can claim a license for free by visiting the promo page and submitting your email address. Stagecraft will send you a product key via email.
It’s a quick process, and well worth it if you enjoy creative dynamics and distortion tools. You also get a chance to use a plugin that’s probably quite unlike all other distortion effects in your arsenal.
Even though ReContour is still in development, it already feels solid, and I found it quite versatile for cinematic sound design. I’m a fan of distortion plugins that go beyond standard clipping and saturation, especially for my sound design work.
ReContour fits that niche perfectly. It combines the nonlinear shaping of a waveshaper with envelope controls you’d typically find on a compressor, like attack, release, and smoothing.
That’s what makes it especially useful for cinematic elements like impacts and whooshes. You can target the distortion to dynamic parts of the signal instead of applying it uniformly across the board. Of course, this can also work in a music production scenario, not just sound design.
In practice, the dynamics-style approach makes the distortion feel more expressive and reactive. It breathes life into static sounds but also makes aggressive textures more controlled and intentional.
If there’s one downside, it’s the interface. I found the GUI a little dark and not the most intuitive at first glance. It might take some getting used to, but the sonic flexibility more than makes up for the initial learning curve.
Stagecraft has hinted at several features that might come in future updates, including a spectrum selector for multiband processing, curve morphing between A/B states, and curve-shifting options. So if you grab a free license now, you could end up with an even more powerful tool down the line.
Overall, ReContour is an innovative take on dynamic distortion that stands out from typical saturation and compression plugins. It’s a fantastic option for producers looking to shape sound in more detailed and expressive ways.
ReContour is available for macOS and Windows. Plugin formats haven’t been specified in detail, but Stagecraft typically supports VST, AU, and AAX.
You can get it for free by visiting the official promo page and entering your email address. Make sure to act fast before the free licenses run out.
IMPORTANT: There are 1,000 licenses available at the time of publishing this article. BPB isn’t affiliated with the developer, and we can’t control how many licenses will be available for BPB readers.
