Coldplay’s Chris Martin jokingly called on Drake and The Weeknd for help during the band’s Toronto concert.
The UK rock band brought their Music of the Spheres World Tour to Toronto’s Rogers Stadium (July 7). While performing their 2014 hit “A Sky Full of Stars,” Martin joked that the band had run into trouble with the city’s Green P parking system.
“I’m so sorry. I’ve just been told that my Green P parking thing is expired,” Martin told the crowd. “We parked in the wrong place. The Green P system in Toronto is very complicated for foreigners.
Martin then walked over to guitarist Jonny Buckland, asking, “Jonny, why’d you park there, man? I told you! You had to park your helicopter in the wrong…” He then turned to drummer Will Champion and said, “Can you call Drake, Will, and ask him to fix it? Call Drake or the Weeknd, or someone like that. Get them to fix it for you.”
It was one of the several tongue-in-cheek moments during Coldplay’s first of four sold-out shows at the 50,000-capacity venue.
“Thank you so much for coming through all the bullshit you had to deal with to get to this weird stadium in the middle of nowhere,” he said, referencing the logistical nightmares that plagued the stadium’s show just weeks before for K-Pop boy band Stray Kids’ concert on June 29, as reported by the Toronto Star.
Martin didn’t hold back on night two either, calling the venue a “very bizarre stadium a million miles from Earth,” per Billboard.
Some of the venue’s issues—including changing seats, water station distributions, crowd flow, and public transit have since been improved, according to Toronto Star.
Martin clarified his comments during the third night of concerts (July 14) and explained he never meant to criticize the venue.
“I have never criticized this stadium that was beautifully, kindly built for us to play in. I don’t think to say anything mean at all. I’m so grateful to have somewhere where we can hang out with all of you,” he told the crowd, according to CBC.
