The Blondie singer is naming names and bringing the specifics.
She opened up for a lengthy interview with Vanity Fair about her relationships, career, family, and more. The most colorful anecdote she told was about fellow rocker David Bowie, and the magazine labeled it a “risque” one. The June 30 article was tied to her 80th birthday.
“I don’t like looking backwards,” Harry told the publication. “I want challenges, I want to look ahead—to expand, or gather my physical, mental state of being and squeeze something out. The way Blondie came to be was sort of wringing something out of desperation, or crazy vision, or comic book life. Just push it out.”
The interviewer asked Harry whether Bowie really exposed himself to her.
She confirmed the tale, which first emerged in her memoir. “Yes. And it was very nice,” Harry told Vanity Fair, laughing.
She also confirmed that he said, “Can I f*** you?” and she replied, “I don’t know, can you?”
“Yes. I was such a smarta**. I regretted saying that, because he was such a wonderful artist and a wonderful person. I was just being punk; I worked very hard at being punk,” she added.
Pressed as to whether he didn’t say “May I?” she responded, “Right, so I answered correctly. He’s British and [I thought] British people have more control and knowledge of proper English.”
The interview then moved on to another topic, never explaining what happened after that point.
Harry has told colorful Bowie stories before, most notably in her memoir.
In 2023, she brushed off any concern over Bowie flashing her in the 1970s, which she described in the book.
“Most women would really die to be in that room,” she told The Times. “Absolutely. You have to consider the context — I was a consenting adult, shall we say. I believe that that is really the borderline.”
