Pope Leo XIV has distant relatives who are just as iconic as him.
Just weeks after the selection of the new Pope, born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, The New York Times has reported that the 69-year-old shares roots with big names like Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Justin Bieber, and Hillary Clinton.
Pope Leo, who was born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1955, is of Creole heritage stemming from his New Orleans ancestors but also had early relatives from Italy, Spain, and France.
Some of these relatives relocated to Quebec in the 1650s, and back six generations, it was found that Spanish governor of the New Orleans district Louis Boucher de Grandpré (1745 – 1809) is Pope Leo’s shared ancestor with Madonna, Bieber, Jolie, and Clinton.
The common ancestor also reveals Pope Leo as a relative of Former Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and late poet and novelist Jack Kerouac.
The Pope’s relation to Madonna is ironic considering that the pop star offended the Vatican on multiple occasions, including her controversial 1989 music video for “Like a Prayer.”
By May 2022, she insisted to the late Pope Francis on Twitter that she was a “good Catholic” and no longer deserved to be excommunicated.
