Warren G has claimed he once had the chance to get Nate Dogg signed to Def Jam but Suge Knight got in the way.
The West Coast rapper/producer reflected on the relationship he had with his “Regulate” co-star during a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club.
“I tried to sign Nate over at Def Jam, had a bag on the table for him,” Warren said (around the 41:30 mark in the video above). “Suge got at him before I could, so Nate went and did a deal with Death Row.”
Warren G claimed that once Nate learned about the deal he was upset, but that everything ended up being fine at the end of the day. “It still worked out because I involved him in a whole bunch of things that I was doing,” he said.
Nate Dogg and Warren G were close friends; so the latter detailed what their relationship was like. “That was my dawg,” he explained. “As far as everyday, we talking on the phone or in the studio working.”
Though the two used to get into verbal and physical altercations, Warren G explained that they always ended up back working together. “We’d fight, squabble, all of that,” he recalled. “He’d call the next day like, ‘What’s up?'”
Elsewhere in his Breakfast Club appearance, Warren G recalled bringing samples to Dr. Dre for him to produce his solo debut, The Chronic.
“I ain’t never taking nothing away from Dre; he’s an incredible producer, the whole nine,” he said. “I was the guy that used to go out, I would bring all of the ideas, so I would bring the samples, and I would sample it, and I play it for Dre like, ‘Listen to this.’ And then he’d be like, ‘That shit is dope.'”
Warren G also admitted that he’s unsure of what his relationship with Dre, who is his stepbrother, is like today. “I don’t even know what kind of relationship we even have,” Warren G admitted. “I haven’t seen him in a while or hung out. I ain’t got nothing against him, but I don’t know if there’s a problem or not.”
“I don’t know what the fuck is going on,” he continued. “I don’t know if somebody might have told him some shit, or said some shit, because a lot of muthafuckas that will do that to get up under a person. I ain’t got nothing against him.”
