Soule DSP releases an early version of the free experimental, semi-modular, waveguide synth, Resonarium, for macOS and Windows.
First and foremost, Resonarium is still in development (version 0.0.10), and this is the time for constructive feedback.
In addition to the typical bugs and crashes that we might expect from any early-stage software, the developer reminds us of the inconsistency of waveguide synthesis and suggests setting safe max output gain levels to avoid the risk of damaging our ears or equipment.
Soule DSP is developing and testing Resonarium on Apple Silicon machines, and although Windows-compatible, there may be unforeseen complications on Windows Machines.
At the time of writing, I’m using an Apple machine running Sequoia 15.2 and the standalone version of Resonarium; however, I will test the plugin in Logic Pro when I have access to my other Mac. I haven’t experienced any significant problems yet.
Resonarium is available in VST3 and Standalone formats for macOS and Windows.
Soule DSP designed the MPE-compatible Resonarium with devices like the Ableton Push 3 and Roli Seaboard in mind and optimized some presets to suit, but this is not a requirement.
Resonarium is intended for use in abstract sound design, and a glance at the GUI clearly indicates the developer’s ambitions for this synth.
There are four Waveguides, each with eight resonators and dedicated Coupling modes to dictate how the resonators are excited and interact.
You’ve got four ADSR Envelopes, four MSEGs, four LFOs, exciters, a built-in sampler and FX, drag-and-drop mono/poly modulation connections, and more.
Resonarium combines several types of physical modeling synthesis, as it utilizes waveguide synthesis, modal synthesis, and Karplus-Strong string synthesis, smoothly transitioning between them.
The result is a wide and varied range of sounds, which is nicely highlighted in the factory presets.
You have simple plucked or struck string sounds transitioning into more textured string sounds, along with sharp or shimmering metallic tones. In addition, there are complex, evolving sounds, the type that benefit most from an MPE-compatible device, and even some almost woodwind-like sounds.
Resonarium will undoubtedly have some teething problems, and feel free to share in the comments, but it certainly has enough positives to develop into something great.
