I’ve been a fan of Baby Audio for a while now. For one, their freebies are excellent. Magic Dice is a personal favorite, closely followed by the relatively new Warp plugin.
Also, I’ve picked up several paid Baby Audio plugins on sale, including the excellent I Heart NY and Super VHS. So, when I saw TAIP on offer, I jumped at the chance, and it’s safe to say it’s already becoming one of my go-to saturation tools.
Tape plugins are all but rare. We recently featured the new 23Tape plugin by 23DSP, and our own BPB Saturator has a tape saturation mode. You should also check out FerricTDS and Chow Tape if you haven’t already.
However, TAIP stands out from the crowd by taking a different route than most tape plugins.
Instead of relying on traditional DSP algorithms, Baby Audio used artificial intelligence to model the nuanced behavior of a real analog tape machine. The result is a plugin that, pardon my fanboyism here, gets the best parts of resampling audio to tape, with all the quirks and imperfections that make tape so special.
I’ve used several tape recorders for processing drum samples and for my cinematic sound design work over the years, but adding tape to your setup is always a hassle. TAIP gives me exactly the flavor I need, slightly exaggerated and over-the-top tape sound, without messing with cables and external gear.
The interface is what I’ve already expected from Baby Audio. It’s sleek and nicely designed, but also super minimal and intuitive. It’s easy to dial in the tone you want, but there’s also plenty of flexibility when you need it.
The two main controls — Drive and Output — handle the basics, while additional knobs let you shape the sound with precision. You’ve got parameters like Noise, Wear, Glue (for tape-style compression), and a Hi/Lo adjustment shaping for tonal balance.
TAIP excels at adding warmth, saturation, and even distortion to anything you throw at it. You can use it for sweetening a drum bus, adding glue to a vocal track, or mangling a synth loop; it handles it all with ease and in many cases better than other tape plugins I tried in the past.
The Glue control is especially satisfying when you want that subtle, compressed “tape feel” that pulls a mix together.
There’s also a dual-tape mode for stacking saturation, a presence boost to add air, and a mix knob that’s perfect for parallel processing. TAIP even has a built-in limiter, so you can push the plugin hard without worrying about clipping.
The only caveat I’ve found is that the CPU hit is somewhat high. It’s definitely higher than more traditional saturation plugins, such as Saturation Knob or BPB Saturator. It’s hitting around 11% CPU per instance on my M1 MacBook Air.
And it’s also worth noting that it leans more toward creative sound shaping than strict authenticity. It’s perfect if you want to use tape saturation and warping as a creative effect.
TAIP is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS (10.11 and newer, including M1/M2/M3 chips) and Windows 10 or later. It’s highly recommended if you need a great-sounding tape plugin that’s a bit different from the rest, so don’t miss this deal.
