Developer Witch Pig releases Apocalypsis, a free multi-FX-mangling plugin for macOS and Windows.
If multi-FX-mangling sounds a bit out there, my other consideration was calling it a free doomsday device, because this plugin is absolute chaos.
We’ve covered quite a few Witch Pig plugins now, like Black Mirror Reverb, Angel Dust, and Starscraper.
If those plugins have taught us anything, it’s that we should always expect the unexpected from Witch Pig.
The developer typically takes an alternative approach to common effects, and the results are often a very dark or quite ethereal character.
In this case, Apocalypsis lives up to its name by leaning heavily into the dark side with sounds that could accompany armageddon (or trigger it).
Another common characteristic of any Witch Pig plugin is a fittingly striking interface, and Apocalypsis might have the most striking one yet.
The vintage TV interface displays various images of a dystopian, religious, and destructive nature, in true end-of-days style.
Once you click on the side panels to reveal the hidden controls, you can start to mangle your sound with twisted reverb, delay, distortion, and pitch shifting.
The dials on the right control the distortion and mix levels, and on the left (from top to bottom), you have:
- Pitch Left
- Pitch Right
- Pitch Shift Attack
- Pitch Shift Release
- Delay
- Feedback
The pitch shifting is great; it adds interesting harmonies, which can sound lovely at times, or enhance the element of instability that Apocalypsis brings to your sound.
My favorite thing is how the pitch shifting can respond to the velocity of your playing, giving you some control over the chaos.
Apocalypsis comes with very nice, and appropriately named, presets, like Seventh Heaven, Descent, and Salvation.
Although the order of the day is certainly chaos, it doesn’t need to be overwhelming, and when you strip back the pitch shifting, you get some much tamer sounds.
I enjoyed the Repercussions preset the most because it’s aggressive, but not wild; it lets me feel like a guitarist on an electric piano, which is always a treat.
As a side note, I encountered an issue with the Witch Pig website; the connection kept timing out. If you encounter the same problem, let us know in the comments below.
Apocalypsis is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
