Windows-G has released E-PeakClipper500, a free JSFX clipper plugin for REAPER, but also compatible with other DAWs via the free YSFX wrapper.
While we usually focus on software that’s DAW-agnostic, I think this one’s worth your attention even if you’re not a REAPER user, mainly because you can run it in other DAWs using the free YSFX wrapper.
Also, the developer Windows-G is a BPB reader whom you’ve likely met in the comments section. For me, having started this website as a small personal blog almost 20 years ago, it’s a dream come true to share free software created by members of the BPB community.
And most importantly, this simple little clipper nails its job without getting in your way with too many features. It’s workflow over workload with this one, and sometimes (if not most of the time) that’s all you want from a mixing utility.
E-PeakClipper500 offers three clipping modes: Soft (Cubic), Hard, and a 50/50 Blend of the two. You also get a ceiling control, input/output gain, and a real-time peak reduction meter with auto-reset on playback.
It’s all you really need to manage peaks cleanly and transparently. It works great for taming spiky percussion or squeezing a bit more loudness before hitting your compressor.
There’s nothing flashy on offer here, and that’s kind of the point. This is the kind of plugin you insert on a channel, tweak quickly, and move on.
For me, that’s exactly how a clipper should behave, especially when I’m working with drums and other transients that need a touch of control without the overhead of setting up a full limiter.
I like using clippers to catch those rogue peaks and already keep things under control before the compressor/limiter, and this one does that job exceptionally well.
The real-time meters are a nice bonus, showing both the current and maximum peak reduction per channel. Input/output gain linking is also included to help you maintain consistent perceived loudness as you push the input harder.
Although E-PeakClipper500 is made for REAPER as a JSFX plugin, it can run in any VST3, AU, or CLAP-compatible DAW using the open-source YSFX wrapper. Just load YSFX in your DAW, point it to the E-PeakClipper500 JSFX file, and you’re good to go.
You can download the plugin for free from Gumroad by entering $0 at checkout (or leave a tip if you want to support the developer).
