Combustor is a dynamics processor that blends traditional compression with adaptive saturation.
Every compressor imparts a certain tonal character, whether through analog circuitry or digital modeling. Combustor builds on that concept by integrating five different saturation types directly into the compression stage.
You get the expected controls (threshold, ratio, attack, release, and knee) alongside RMS/Peak behavior and a sidechain mode for external triggering. I like that the parameter ranges are quite generous, so you can easily move from subtle transient shaping to heavier compression.
The saturation section is where Combustor separates itself from a standard utility compressor.
There are five models labeled A through E, ranging from gentle tube-style warmth to more aggressive, driven circuitry. The saturation reacts to both the incoming signal and your compression settings, so the character changes depending on how hard you push it.
You can blend in the effect using the dedicated Saturation control and fine-tune the overall balance with the global Mix knob for parallel compression.
The interface is dark, which is pretty useful for late-night mixing sessions, and I especially like the small touches that add convenience while mixing.
For example, the Input and Output sliders offer up to ±24 dB of gain adjustment, making level matching easy during A/B testing. The central stereo meters show gain reduction in real time and warn you if levels are running hot.
Combustor also includes a healthy collection of factory presets. They cover a wide range of use cases, from more assertive master-bus pumping to lighter dynamic control for vocals, drums, and bass.
Presets can serve as starting points for setting the tone by adjusting the saturation type, mix amount, and compression parameters to suit your material.
Additional features include pop-and-click-free bypass, a resizable interface, and CPU-friendly performance.
Combustor is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats for Windows 10/11 (64-bit) and macOS 10.15 or higher (64-bit), with AAX support for Pro Tools 12 or later.
