Part of their free Vaults series, Dulcet Vocal is the little sister plugin of The Crow Hill Company’s Dulcet Voice, featuring Dot Alison.
Dot Alison is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and composer with a wealth of experience spanning the stage, studio, and film.
If you aren’t familiar with Dot’s ethereal vocals, you can hear her on tracks like Massive Attack’s Aftersun.
Since Dulcet Vocal is the junior version of Dulcet Voice, we don’t have the same type of performance flexibility with keyswitches, but we do get that ethereal voice, and it’s lovely.
Dulcet Vocal features the standard Vaults interface we’ve seen in previous releases, such as Harmonium, Lo-Fi Strings, and Bridge Guitar.
Vaults plugins are available in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
As always, we have two large dials and four small. The two large dials are Timbre and Scatter.
Timbre is a dynamic filter that adjusts the tonal quality and volume of the voice. The change in tonal quality, although not extreme, makes it more than a standard expression control.
The Scatter blends in vocal flurries and tremolos, and it’s a great way to take Dulcet Vocal from a great vocal pad to the star of the composition for a period. The flurries and tremolos are unmeasured, but Scatter sounds more organic than it does random, and it’s very ambient-score-friendly.
The first of the smaller dials, Repeat, is another way to make Dulcet Vocal the star, but in a different way. Repeat slices, repeats, and reverses the voice to create glitchy, tempo-synced rhythmic patterns; along with Scatter, it’s my favorite feature.
Mod is a frequency-shifter-based modulation effect. The effect adds depth and width, but in emotive terms, it’s a nice way to lean hard into the ethereal sound and texture. It takes the voice from something organic toward something more other-worldly, with synth-like textures.
The last two small dials are Echo and Splosh, as is the case with all Vaults instruments.
Echo is a stereo ping-pong delay, and Splosh is a lush reverb.
Dulcet Vocal is something a bit different, and whether you want a haunting vocal for a film/game project, or you want to add a layer to an ambient or electronic track, it works very well.
