Stone Voices now offers the Ambient Reverb 7 plugin as a free download for Windows and macOS, previously priced at $52.28.
This isn’t the developer’s first foray into freeware reverbs. DReverb 2.0 is another excellent reverb from Stone Voices, widely regarded as one of the best algorithmic reverbs you can get without spending a cent.
But Ambient Reverb 7 takes things further, especially for those of us who lean into cinematic, ambient, and experimental sound design.
It’s also worth noting that Ambient Reverb was first released as freeware, then became a paid plugin, and is now available for free once again.
I tasted the latest version on my M1 MacBook Air laptop, and after just 20 minutes with it, I knew I’d be keeping it in my cinematic sound design toolkit.
The freeze function alone is worth the download. It allows you to transform simple sound sources, such as a single piano note or a plucked synth tone, into lush, ambient pads.
If you want to make things even more extreme, crank the decay time to the max (100 seconds), and you’ve got yourself a drone generator that turns just about anything into an atmospheric texture. You can then load it into a sampler plugin, soften the attack, add some reverb on top, and get some incredibly lush pads.
From a sound quality standpoint, Ambient Reverb 7 is one of the best free reverbs I’ve tested. And let’s be honest—most freeware reverbs, especially older ones, sound brittle or metallic. OrilRiver and EpicPLATE are some of the few exceptions.
Compared to most other freeware reverb offerings, Ambient Reverb 7 is in a different league.
The CPU efficiency is another highlight. You can stack this on multiple channels or use it in a send/return setup without worrying about system strain.
Ambient Reverb 7 isn’t just about pads, though. It also introduces some new features in its latest version, including LFO modulation of delay lines and mid-side input splitting via the “Split” control.
The reverb operates in true stereo mode and offers precise control over early reflections and size. You can even map parameters to a MIDI controller for real-time manipulation.
I also appreciate the clean and freely resizable GUI introduced in the latest version. Other highlights include a built-in EQ, level meters, and 40 factory presets to help you get started with ambient sound design.
Ambient Reverb 7 is available as a VST2, VST3, and AU plugin for Windows and macOS. You can download it for free from Stone Voices’ website without registration. The plugin doesn’t require activation.
