By July 2024, Steph Curry had developed a strong distaste for “Not Like Us” — Kendrick Lamar’s scathing diss track aimed at Curry’s longtime friend Drake.
The Golden State point guard defended his position during his sitdown on 360 With Speedy, roughly a year after Curry was filmed complaining about K.Dot’s Grammy-winning hit. The moment went down at the 2024 Summer Olympics, following Team USA’s win over Serbia at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Footage showed Curry and his teammate LeBron James standing on the court as “Not Like Us” began blaring through the stadium speakers. Curry was visibly annoyed by the track, declaring, “Damn with this song. It’s not the only song in America.”
“I love it,” LeBron replied.
Speedy Mormon questioned Curry about the viral moment, asking if he disliked the track because it was overplayed or because he was tight with Drake.
“It was both,” Curry said. “Everywhere we went, that’s all I heard. You can’t do nothing about what the DJ’s playing… I got sick of it at a certain point. And it’s funny that the cameras caught me, because that was from the soul.”
Curry shed more light on the friendship when asked about his influence in hip-hop. Speedy pointed out that Curry had been name-dropped in many rap songs, “most notably” Drake’s 2014 cut “0 to 100 / The Catch Up.”
“I been Steph Curry with the shot/Been cookin’ with the sauce, Chef Curry with the pot, boy,” Drizzy rapped in the opening verse.
Curry said Drake was the only rapper who gave him a heads up before referencing him in a song.
“He’s the only one who’s called me and told me like, ‘Yo, you gotta hear this,’” Curry told Speedy. “Other than that, it’s totally random, totally a surprise.”
But the Curry-Drake friendship went far beyond the lyrical name-drops.
“It seems like you and Drake are super cool. Every time I see y’all courtside, it’s love,” Speedy said. “And if I’m not mistaken, he has you tatted.”
Speedy was right. Drake has Curry’s jersey number, 30, inked on his left arm. The numeral is positioned beneath a halo and above the word “gifted.”
“We go way back, though,” Curry said before touching on Drake’s connection to his wife, Ayesha Curry. “It’s actually kind of a family thing, too. One of Ayesha’s cousins, she’s from Toronto and the whole deal, so we’re from the same boat.”
