Developer Sonora Cinematic has released Drift, a free cinematic expansion pack for Audiomodern’s Soundbox.
For those unfamiliar, Soundbox is a customizable MPE sampler that aims to give users ultimate control over any sound.
If you have an MPE controller, such as a Roli Seaboard, you can adjust multiple parameters simultaneously in real-time based on the touch, pressure, and movement of your fingers on the keys.
Audiomodern’s Soundbox is free to download, and the developer has released several free packs, including Spectra and Mechania, to get you started.
In addition to the Audiomodern selection, third-party developers, like Sonora Cinematic, have released expansion packs for Soundbox.
Drift is Sonora Cinematic’s fourth Soundbox expansion pack, but the first available for free download.
Drift, as its name might suggest, focuses on evolving cinematic textures. The pack content comes from an orchestral recording session for a larger project; Drift offers four distinct presets crafted from processed woodwind textures.
As we’ve seen through previous releases, like Sonixinema’s Whispering Woodwinds, the texture provided by woodwind instruments is often vital to a great score.
The presets are Dark Echoes, Drifting Amience, Granular Alto Flute Flutter, and Granular Wind.
The preset names describe everything you can expect from Drift: atmosphere, movement, evolution, and texture.
The presets work well individually for specific tasks. For example, the Drifting Ambience preset is very vague, and it’s perfect for creating an ominous mood because it never feels settled.
While you still get some identifiable character from the woodwinds, these presets are designed to lean into the ethereal and otherworldly side of composition.
Layering all four presets is where you get the best out of Drift. It’s not just creating a bigger sound; once you layer all that movement and texture, mix and pan it as you please, you end up with some adorable sounds that could form the emotional foundation of any scene.
Any cinematic, dream-like sound is always useful for more than media composition. Drift is an expansion pack that you could feature on most kinds of electronic music in one way or another.
