Smokey Robinson’s lawyer is speaking out after the Miracles founder and Grammy winner was accused of sexual assault by multiple Jane Does in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles this week.
In a statement to Complex, Christopher Frost, attorney to Smokey and Frances Robinson, said that forthcoming evidence “will show that this is simply an ugly method of trying to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon.” According to Frost, the aim here is to get the suit in question dismissed, all while working to “fiercely defend” the Robinsons.
“We will have more to say in the coming days as we make our legal response, and in time Mr. Robinson will respond in his own words,” Frost told Complex in response to news of the suit, which was filed on Tuesday. “As this case progresses, the evidence (the crucial element that guides us) will show that this is simply an ugly method of trying to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon—$50 million dollars, to be exact.”
Frost continued, “Through this process we have seen the bizarre theatrics of yesterday’s news conference, as the plaintiffs’ attorneys outlined vile, false allegations against Mr. and Mrs. Robinson, trying to enlist the public as an unwitting participant in the media circus they are trying to create. We ask anyone following this case to reserve judgment as the evidence comes to light and all the actual facts of the case unfold.”
As previously reported, Robinson, 85, was accused of sexual battery, assault, and false imprisonment in the suit, which focuses on alleged incidents spanning from 2007 to 2024. Frances, Smokey’s wife, was also named in the suit, which sees the four accusers claiming that they previously worked as housekeepers for the Robinsons. One accuser alleged that the singer assaulted her “on 23 different occasions.”
In Frost’s statement, it’s argued that there are “inconsistencies” with the allegations. In addition to asking for a dismissal, per Frost, Robinson’s legal team will also be zeroing in on what they say are instances of the accusers’ lawyers reaching “beyond the bounds of liberties” usually allowed in such cases.
