Plugin Boutique is currently running historically low prices on three Roland synthesizer plugins, with the Roland D-50 leading the way at 67% off (down to $49 from $149). The deal runs until March 3rd.
The D-50 is my main pick here. Released in 1987, it was Roland’s first fully digital synthesizer and one of the most influential instruments of the late ‘80s.
Its LA (Linear Arithmetic) synthesis engine combined subtractive synthesis with harmonically complex sampled waveforms and integrated digital effects, producing sounds that defined synth pop, new wave, new jack swing, R&B, new age, and countless film scores of the era.
If you’ve heard a famous track from the late ‘80s or early ‘90s, there’s a reasonable chance a D-50 preset was somewhere in it.
Roland describes its own plugin as the only 100% authentic software reproduction of the hardware. And it makes sense coming from the company that manufactured the original.
It uses the same sampled waveform set as the original, and Roland’s Digital Circuit Behavior modeling technology recreates the sonic character of the hardware down to the “overtone noise” that gives the D-50 its texture.
The original joystick interface and factory presets are included virtually, along with some pretty sweet modern additions like extra waveforms, a tempo-syncing LFO, and a virtual PG-1000 controller (based on the optional hardware programmer for the original D-50) that makes deep sound design more fun.
You can also import SysEx files from an original D-50 hardware unit or third-party libraries, and swap patches with the Roland Boutique D-05.
The plugin runs on Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 11 and higher, in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. An internet connection is required for installation and activation via Roland Cloud.

The other two deals are also worth a look if you’re into Roland’s PCM era.
The JV-1080 ($64.50, 50% off until March 1st) is a plugin recreation of the 1994 rack synth that shaped the sound of ’90s R&B, pop, and hip hop. The plugin version expands on the original with over 1,000 waveforms (up from 448), 78 MFX types (up from 40), double the polyphony, and a Step LFO.
The XV-5080 ($64.50, 50% off until March 1st) is a recreation of Roland’s flagship PCM sound module from 2000, with over 900 presets, deep editing options, and compatibility with Roland SRX Expansion Boards.
All three require a Roland Cloud account for activation.
