You can currently nab Rhodes’ V-Pan Vari-Pan effect plugin (normally $39.95) for free download by signing up for the Rhodes newsletter.
The plugin replicates the Vari-Pan vibrato stereo panning circuit of Rhodes’ flagship MK8 e-piano.
The V-Pan is suitable for adding swirling, ethereal textures to various sources, with Rhodes suggesting pairing it with synth, keyboard, guitar, or vocals.
V-Pan is a macOS (macOS 11 or higher, Intel or Silicon processor) and Windows (Windows 10 or higher) release for AAX, AU, VST2, and VST3.
To score your free copy of the V-Pan, head to the giveaway page and submit an email address (which can be a temp email) to sign up for the mailing list.
Rhodes will then immediately email you a coupon code and a guide to getting the freebie.
You’ll need to add V-Pan to your cart at the Rhodes website, then open the coupon field at the top of the cart and submit the coupon.
After submitting, the total at the bottom right of the cart will reduce to $0, and you’ll be able to submit the cart.
At that point, you’ll need to create an account and provide a shipping address, phone number, and email address to complete the checkout and get the download link.
Rhodes dropped the V-Pan as a plugin release on December 18, 2023. It replicates the Vari-Pan circuit from Rhodes’ MK8 e-piano, which was a redesign of the classic Rhodes piano that launched in 2021.
Generally, I’d describe the sound of the V-Pan as a subtle effect with a vintage sound, although at higher settings, you can get more attention-grabbing sounds.
The no-frills main panel features the following controls: Vari-Wave, Rate, Depth, Slew, and Smooth. There’s also a BPM sync function.
At lower settings, the V-Pan provides texture, movement, and ambience that thickens tones and adds a distinctive sound.
At higher settings, you can create ring-mod effects that really catch the ear.
It’s a simple plugin, but there’s a lot to love here, as you can use the V-Pan to add some flavour and movement on parts to make them pop.
