PSPaudioware has a Halloween treat for everyone, and you don’t even need to dress up to get it. They have just released PSP Spector, a free 31-band spectrum analyzer for macOS and Windows.
But before I continue with the latest offerings, it would be remiss of me to mention Halloween on the 31st of October without wishing our fearless founder, Tomislav, a very happy birthday and encouraging everyone to try his Halloween Sounds horror plugin (99Sounds)! All the best, Tomislav!
PSPaudioware, the award-winning developer, is offering PSP Spector, a 31-band spectrum analyzer, for free.
You may have seen this spectrum analyzer before, as it features in the premium plugins, PSP ConsoleQ and PSP preQursor3. Now, for the first time, it’s available as an independent plugin, available in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
To claim your free copy of PSP Spector, simply log in or create a new account on the PSPaudioware website.
PSP Spector is an intuitive and easy-to-use analyzer that provides an accurate visual representation of your audio’s frequency balance.
The plugin allows you to select the displayed channel and offers multiple display modes for peak (mark lines or smooth curve) and RMS (bars or curve) information.
Additionally, you have a selectable dB range for flexible metering and an adjustable dB reference level.
You can also adjust the peak hold time to zero, two, or ten seconds.
Another interesting feature is the built-in high-pass filter, but one of my favorite things about PSP Spector is that it comes with fifteen tutorial factory presets to help you get the most out of the analyzer.
A spectrum analyzer isn’t the most exciting tool, and visual feedback shouldn’t overrule your ears, but they are incredibly handy on your master bus.
Besides providing confirmation or reassurance of a balanced mix, a good spectrum analyzer can help you identify potential problems that you might otherwise miss at the extreme ends of the spectrum.
By now, we’ve got a decent selection of free spectrum analyzers to choose from; Reflex Acoustics gave us the Reflex Spectrum Analyzer in 2024, and earlier this year, we got the APU Spectrum Analyzer from APU Software.
