Lizzo shared more details on the changes she’s made to her lifestyle as part of her weight loss journey.

During a TikTok Live on Tuesday (April 22), the 36-year-old singer gave more insights on her “weight release” journey she began in 2023.

One of the steps that helped the “About Damn Time” singer lower her body mass index by 10.5 and lose 16% of her body fat includes cutting down on “sugary stuff” in the morning, opting for breakfasts that are “super savory.”

“I do something sweet. It’s gotta be with some sort of like carb. I’ll have like almond butter and toast. So, everybody’s body is different. Find out what works for you,” Lizzo said per People, while noting that she believes in the scientific method of “calories in versus calories out.”

However, the singer has a specific warning about anyone who might be crunching numbers to stay under a calorific deficit.

“We rebel against counting calories because it is a gateway to eating disorders,” she said. “I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly be counting calories and to constantly have that number in your head. I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly get on the scale and always be checking your weight, and to be obsessed with the numbers.”

Lizzo also talked about the country’s food system at large. “What I also don’t think is healthy is the American food system that sneaks calorically dense foods into our bodies because it’s all we can afford right now, or because it look really good, or it’s because we all it’s all we have access to, or because it’s how I grew up and it’s all I know,” she added. “Sometimes I have to use [calorie counting] as a tool to fight against the American food system. But when I cook at home when I cook for myself or … when I eat at home I don’t have to.”

While reflecting on her past habits, Lizzo recalled drinking “two to three” large Starbucks drinks a day until she realized she was consuming up to 1,200 calories from the beverages alone.

“Once I realized that I had stopped drinking coffee, and also I had had, like, panic attacks and stuff so I just stopped drinking coffee for a while, and I had to regulate my nervous system,” she said.

“I had to start applying a calorie deficit, because I was prone to binging,” she continued.

Lizzo also discussed how anxiety affected her journey, saying, “I’ve been working to get my anxiety under control for years. And then I decided that I want to release and I’m ready to stop waiting to be myself like fully and be happy.”

She continued, “And I meditated. I calmed myself down. And I isolated a little bit, but not like made myself lonely, not the way I used to when I was depressed. I isolated myself in a mindful way where I had no distractions. I loved to distract myself with people. I loved to distract myself with food. I loved to distract myself with drinking. I loved to distract myself with problems that I would create. I would love to do that. And I stopped doing that, and I just focused on me.”
