Developer Bespoke Samples has released Liquidize, a free effect plugin designed to add a watery, fluid-like character to your sounds.
Liquidize blends a self-modulating vocoder, reverb, and phaser into a streamlined interface that excels at transforming ordinary audio into lush, liquid textures.
At its core, the plugin uses a vocoder with modulating characteristics that respond dynamically to the input signal. It’s not your typical robotic vocoder sound, though.
Liquidize also combines a reverb and a phaser, and the result is a unique sound design tool that feels like a distant cousin of Kilohearts’ Disperser. And if you like that idea, also check out the free KiTiK Disburser.
Whether or not the inner workings are similar to Disperser, the results are in the same ballpark. You get those liquid-like, phasey tails that sound super interesting in futuristic.
Such sounds are often used for layering in cinematic booms, impacts, and other tension-building FX, so I’m happy to add another effect like this to my sound design toolkit for free.
Anyway, where Liquidize truly shines is turning simple sounds into evolving, morphing elements with just a bit of tweaking.
It also sounds gorgeous on pads, especially when you want some movement and shimmer. But you should absolutely try it on guitars, percussion (for some seriously wild hi-hat textures), and even vocals if you’re chasing something strange and otherworldly.
The interface is clean, but don’t expect to fully understand all the parameters on first use. The controls took a little time for me to click, and this is one of those plugins where experimenting will serve you better than reading a manual.
The Bands and Bandwidth knobs are a good place to start; they control the resolution and width of the vocoder bands. From there, play around with the Phaser, Verb, and Size parameters to push your sound further.
The Mix knob lets you blend the processed sound with your original signal, and a final Gain control helps level things out.
Liquidize is available now as a free download on Gumroad with an optional donation model. Enter zero to get it for free, or pay what you want to support the developer.
It’s compatible with macOS 10.13 to 14 (including Apple Silicon) and Windows 10/11. Formats include VST3 and AU (64-bit only).
