BandMatrix by Kojima Audio is a multi-band dynamics plugin available for free on both macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
The plugin has 6 bands that apply compression and expansion, like your run-of-the-mill multi-band compressor, but that’s not all.
I’ve never heard about this developer before, but their concept delivers right out of the gate.
What’s special about BandMatrix is its ability to drive each band from separate sources. It could be the internal signal itself, external inputs via the sidechain, or making any band drive any other band, which opens up a vast amount of creative possibilities and problem-solving.
For instance, a standard use case is to let an external kick drum track drive the lowest band to reduce clashing and add punch without affecting the rest of the signal.
You could also configure it as a standard de-esser and high-, where the compressor reacts to harshness in the internal signal.
The ability to let each band react to any separate external source also means that you could make pads, loops, or complex sounds even more interesting by feeding each band from an entirely different source.
The plugin can be used in mid/side mode, offering a solo feature and a listen function apt for detailed tweaking. You can also choose if the band reacts to Peak or RMS.
Each band has attack, release, sharpness, and depth parameters, as well as gain and stereo linking. There’s also a tone shaping mode for adjusting the spectral balance within the multi-band compression matrix.
Lastly, the plugin boasts a lookahead feature and optional auto-gain for even more control.
Everything is packed into a nice-looking and easy-to-understand user interface with visual feedback.
This makes BandMatrix a dynamics and tone-shaping powerhouse that can work on anything from subtle mixing tasks and bus control to mastering and creative sound design.
Definitely worth checking out if you need a flexible dynamics plugin with, at least as far as I’m concerned, a unique routing system!
