During an appearance on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, hosted by Carmelo Anthony and the Kid Mero, comedian Katt Williams was asked how he feels about the comparisons between him and Kendrick Lamar when it comes to being dedicated “haters.”
“[Kendrick’s] 2024 run is going to be remembered by a lot of people as… the summer that he absolutely destroyed Drake,” said Mero around the 1:39:00 point of the podcast. “K Dot exposing a lot of what’s going in the industry.” Katt chimed in to say that he firmly believes that Kendrick has “been one of the top three greatest rappers from his very first project, which is almost unheard of.”
When it was suggested that a lot of people who are fans of Kendrick are also fans of Katt, he appeared to agree. “I’m not somebody you want to have beef with, it’s bad optics,” he said. “I’m on the righteous side and if I make a mistake, work with me.” He said it was especially impressive that Kendrick was able to put on such a successful show in Toronto, which is Drake’s home turf.
“We’re not talking about Drake doing his show in LA, we are not talking about him in the Bay, we’re not talking about that,” he said. “But we are talking about Kendrick going there and doing the body of work. That’s what it means to stand on them ten. It means standing on that business. I said what I said over here and I’ll be saying it over there as well. And that’s what so critical about me trying to make sure that I say it as viciously as I mean to say it, to say it as accurately as I can say it. … This is part of keeping that energy, you got to respect it.”
When the portion of “Euphoria” in which Kendrick declared himself “the biggest hater” came up, Katt said he disagreed with the idea that K Dot is, in fact, a hater.
“He was very specific, so that you understand that this not hatred,” he said. “He’s saying, ‘I don’t hate you, I just hate all of the choices that you make, ‘cause those are the choices that bitch-ass n***as make.’ That’s all. I’m saying, I’m in the position where I’m a fan of both artists. … Kendrick is not who you wanted to tussle with. … We just felt like because it was Drake that he would get that exemption. But not only is he going to not get that exemption, he’s going to be under more scrutiny.”
Asked if he’s kindred spirits with Kendrick, Katt replied, “I would hope so.” He then referenced when Kendrick shouted him out on the GNX intro, “Wacced Out Murals,” on which he rapped, “Make Katt Williams and them proud, the truth ‘bout to get loud.”
