Jin’s ‘Echo’: Songs Ranked

Jin’s first official foray into country rock comes via “Rope It,” which is infused with clever wordplay and a joyous spirit, while also employing some of the genre’s more played-out motifs, as it opens with a whistling wind and horse neighs that sound best kept in classic western films. The track boasts a theme to remind us that achieving dreams often also means knowing when to let go — a metaphor apt for a cowboy lassoing any bull or beast — delivered alongside twangy guitars and hand-claps.

While we’re totally here for BTS experimenting more in country (some forget that BTS’ first Grammy performance was as special guests during Lil Nas X’s celebratory performance of his country crossover “Old Town Road” back in pre-pandemic 2020), the production might be a little too straightforward to the point of country-pop cliché, not lending itself to the layered subtlety fans expect from most BTS records. But when Jin sings lyrics like, “When they go low, we go high,” his trademark optimism is channeled even amid the rodeo of life’s challenges, which Echo looks to discuss. “Rope It” may not break new ground, but it is a memorable and joyous detour in Jin’s solo story.

Jin’s debut record Happy included one collaboration (in the stunning, emotional synth-pop cut “Heart on the Window” with Wendy of Red Velvet) — and, once again, Jin employs just a sole female duet partner for this EP, choosing YENA (formerly of IZ*ONE) to feature on “Loser.” The pair trade barbs in the playful, pop-punk duet that spotlights the whiplash of emotions from quarreling lovers, moving from “You love me, you miss me/ You tell me I’m beautiful” into the shouty bridge, “Not a loser, loser, you’re the loser, loser!/ Love that you’re my loser, okay, you’re my loser.” While the infectious guitar riffs and bickering lyrics will hook listeners, they should stay for the vocal climbs and glides Jin showcases across the chorus, showing that even the more fun tracks are still pushing him vocally.

To bring in a partner like YENA (whose 2023 single “Hate Rodrigo” was a tongue-in-cheek jealousy anthem towards Billboard chart-topper Olivia Rodrigo, which ended up ruffling the feathers of fans who wouldn’t see it beyond a diss track) shows “Loser” has a self-awareness to know that it is not (and does not need to be) the most mature song on the album. Instead, Jin still flexes his singing chops to prove that even his most fun tracks are also vocal showcases in disguise.

Closing Echo on a note of unbridled optimism, “To Me, Today” is an alt-rock tribute to living in the moment. Co-written with experimental rapper-producer sokodomo, Jin’s lyrics announce “Now I fly to where my heart beats,” acting as both an empowering declaration and invitation for listeners to also live for today and deem themselves “the one.” Pivoting through the introspective mid-tempo verses and reaching full-throttle euphoria, the song’s structure mirrors a journey of self-discovery to ultimately encapsulate the larger emotional impact of Echo, and ensure that its messages of hope and strength resonate far beyond this final song.

Jin’s ballad mastery is on full display in representative ballad “Background,” which sits comfortably alongside career highlights like “Moon,” “Abyss” and his World Digital Song Sales No. 1 hits “Yours” and “Close to You.”

Opening with gentle guitar, the first verse finds Jin reaching out to a past love and hearing only the echo of his own voice. His wistful reflection heard in lyrics like “Maybe in another place, another time,” gives way to the resignation of “I’ll be here in the background,” a lyrical echo that underscores the album’s overarching theme. As one of Echo’s most emotionally resonant and mature moments, “Background” not only anchors the record’s reflective side, but also displays the deeper introspection in Jin’s latest musical chapter.

A British-rock-inspired anthem with clear Coldplay “Viva la Vida” inspirations, “Nothing Without Your Love” is propelled by live strings, bass and guitar, and a soaring chorus that sounds tailor-made for Jin’s crystal-clear tenor. Jin co-wrote the lyrics alongside the song’s producers Arcades (the duo have worked on beloved b-sides off BTS albums like 2019’s Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7 from 2020, as well as “Another Level” off Jin’s Happy EP), framing love as the very air we breathe for a cinematic, triumphant showcase. “Nothing” will easily be one of the most exciting tracks to hear live on his upcoming #RunSeokJin tour — we can already hear the arenas singing along.

As Echo’s lead single, this restrained pop-rock mid-tempo number juxtaposes its soothing melodies with the bittersweet ache of a love that won’t let go.

With his voice steady yet tender over breezy California-rock guitars and synth production, Jin’s nuanced delivery conveys the push-pull of a breakup as he pleads, “Don’t tell me that you’re gonna miss me/ Just tell me that you wanna kill me/ Don’t say that you love me ’cause it hurts the most/ You just gotta let me go.” Entirely sung in English, like Happy’s lead single “Running Wild,” it underscores Jin’s push toward a global narrative. Crafted with producers Nathan “Tiggs” Fertig (who’s been behind some of Alec Benjamin and Tate McRae’s chiller songs) and Wyatt Sanders (whose credits range from ian diorr to NCT DREAM), the track’s soothing melody and emotional resonance feel radio and TikTok-ready to mark a confident step into Jin’s evolving solo story.

The accompanying music video only further displays Jin’s growth and ever-growing potential, telling the heartbreaking story of lovers failing to express themselves to one another. Starring alongside Korean actress Shin Se-kyung, the visual is another reminder that he needs to be cast as a leading man in a movie or drama ASAP.

Invoking imagery of an animated film, “With the Clouds” unfolds a fairytale-like story as Jin invites the listener to join his journey with a “cloud” friend. Strings, guitar and more live instruments gradually swell around his voice’s warm reverb, all slowly becoming more focused as the song embraces sonic surprises like tempo shifts and forgoing a traditional bridge.

Throughout the changes, Jin balances introspection with optimism — his co-penned lyrics acknowledge life’s gray moments while still looking ahead with hope. Co-written with long-time collaborators Pdogg and Adora, as well as Yojiro Noda (the lead singer and guitarist for Japanese band Radwimps, whose soundtracks for beloved anime movies like Your Name and Weathering With You have gained international recognition), for a song that can be both deeply personal and cinematic in its presentation.

Where last year’s Happy celebrated brightness and uplift, Echo delves deeper into emotion. As the BTS member who constantly talks about ARMY and never forgets to show his gratitude to them, “With the Clouds” feels like his way of not hiding from the fact that he, too, recognizes that not every day is sunshine. Sometimes, the clouds must open and let the rain pour, and Jin’s here to give you permission for a good cry. But he also brings a sense of hope and offers himself as a friend ready to bring you back from your gray days once again, which may be the most essential role of an idol.

“With the Clouds” stands to become another signature Jin song: vulnerable, cathartic and, ultimately, healing. It’s arguably the album’s most important song, a testament to his growth as both artist and idol.
