Initial Audio has released Initial Clipper 2, a free soft clipper plugin for Windows and macOS.
This isn’t the first time Initial Audio has offered a free clipper. Some of you might remember the original Initial Clipper from 2021. Version 2 brings a refreshed interface, higher-resolution real-time scope, and a new ceiling control, while keeping the workflow simple and intuitive.
I like how the new GUI looks. The dark theme with teal and purple highlights is very easy on the eyes, and I think it’s one of the better-looking free clipper plugins out there.
The layout is straightforward: the main display is dominated by a real-time analyzer that shows your signal before and after clipping. To the right, you’ll find output meters that make gain staging easier.
As for controls, you get input gain, threshold, saturation, and the new ceiling knob. The saturation control lets you push harmonics for extra warmth, while the ceiling knob ensures your output doesn’t exceed your desired level.
I particularly like that they included a dry/wet mix control, which is accessible when you expand the interface. That’s a handy feature for parallel processing, which is something I often do with drums, but it also works well on vocals if you want a bit of edge without flattening the dynamics.
Another nice touch is the integrated LUFS metering, with options for Integrated, Short Term, Momentary, and Loudness Range modes. Being able to monitor loudness right inside the clipper is a big plus, especially if you’re aiming for streaming platform levels or just want a quick reference without loading another meter.
Functionally, it’s not a huge leap from the original version, but the refinements make it a better all-around tool. The higher-resolution analyzer is more precise, the new GUI is clean, and the ceiling control is a handy addition to the feature set.
If you already have a clipper or two, you might wonder if you need another. My answer would typically be not really, but this one’s free, looks great, and sounds solid. And with the dry/wet control and LUFS metering, it goes beyond the basics.
Initial Clipper 2 is available as a free download, but you’ll need to log in (or sign up) to your Initial Audio account to unlock the download link. It comes in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
