Want to scare some kids and neighbours on Halloween? Here’s your ticket! Aurora DSP has released their Halloween special high-gain plugin and cab simulator, Nosferatu, for macOS and Windows.
Nosferatu is a plugin with three distinct sections and additional utilities, offering a wide range of spooky metal tones. Let’s dive in!
The stomp box all the way to the left in the UI panel is an aggressive distortion with a high-gain character. It boasts a three-band EQ for adjustments to the low, mid, and high frequencies, respectively; a volume knob, and gain control to shape the tone further.
If you’d like even more bite and grit, use the “Boost” switch to engage some additional simulated voltage.
Next up, drive your signal into the tube-based power amp section of Nosferatu. The amp has an on/off switch and controls for presence and resonance.
The signal then enters a cab simulator with two different impulse responses, which allows you to play anything from “tight, modern metal to doomy, decaying sludge,” according to the developer. The impulse responses are blendable with a slider at the top of the cab, so you can coax quite a few sounds out of it.
Nosferatu´s UI features a handy on/off switch panel for the different sections at the bottom. This allows you to test different combinations to get in the right ballpark quickly and without too much unnecessary movement, which is great.
While the plugin is easy to “plug and play”, it provides a lot of tweaking to make your tone fit the mix.
However, there is still more on offer here!
Aurora DSP has packed Nosferatu with extra utilities: input/output controls for gain staging, a tuner, a pitch transpose control(!), a noise gate, and MIDI integration.
Nosferatu also has a control for studio ambience with a studio environment listening option for those of you who might need it.
I couldn’t figure out exactly how long this offer lasts, but my recommendation would be to download this thing immediately if it sounds interesting to you. It might be a one-day offer as Aurora DSP tells customers to hurry!
Nosferatu is definitely a no-brainer if you have a hard time getting that guitar DI to chug properly, and don’t forget that this tool could be handy for a lot of different purposes, even though it’s marketed toward the garden-variety metal guitarist.
