Developer 23DSP is offering its StereoChorus plugin for free. The plugin is available for both Windows and macOS in VST and AU formats.
If the name didn’t give it away, StereoChorus is a dual-channel modulation plugin that allows you to dial in chorus effects for the left and right channels separately.
This can open up interesting possibilities for both mixing and sound design by creating additional depth, movement, and smearing in the stereo image.
Try adding it to some dry tracks that need some additional interest.
The interesting aspect of this plugin, in particular, is its ability to completely separate processing for the left and right channels. StereoChorus has a simple layout.
There are two sections with depth, rate, feedback, and delay controls for the left and right channels. In the middle of the plugin, you have two goniometers that provide visual feedback in real-time. This might come in handy by giving you some clues about phase relationships.
Lastly, the slider at the bottom of the UI is a global mix control, letting you blend the effect with the dry signal.
It’s smart to check heavy use of mono to ensure compatibility. Whooshing that makes you seasick or sounds losing their momentum on mono systems is never fun.
Use this plugin to fatten up tracks, to widen the stereo image, giving pads and FX more depth, or to stereoize boring mono recordings.
If you feel experimental, StereoChorus could also be a nice starting point for creating really weird, fluctuating sounds, and your source audio if you need additional layers of FX in your track.
