Plugin Boutique is currently offering iZotope VocalSynth 2 at 85% off, bringing it down to $29 from its regular price of $199. The deal runs until March 1st.
VocalSynth 2 is one of my favorite vocal processing plugins, and at it’s almost a steal at this price, considering how versatile it is.
Also, it’s primarily a vocal tool, but I use it regularly for sound design to create weird textures from percussion, found sounds, and field recordings. It really works on any audio signal, and that makes it so hard for me to put down.
It gives you five modules you can blend together: Vocoder, Compuvox, Polyvox, Talkbox, and Biovox.
Each handles a different type of vocal synthesis and processing, from classic robotic vocoder sounds to talkbox effects and harmony generation you get from stacking pitch-shifted layers.
Biovox is the most unique of the five. It uses a scientific model of the human vocal tract to adjust characteristics like nasality, vowel shape, and formant position. This is the one I use the most on non-vocal sources like synths, percussion, and random recordings.
On top of the five modules, there’s a drag-and-drop stompbox effects chain with seven processors: Shred (with sequencer), Ring Mod, Chorus, Distort, Filter, Transform, and Delay. These sit after your module blend and can be reordered freely. So there’s plenty of room for building multi-effects, even if you don’t want to process vocals.
VocalSynth 2 can react to the incoming audio in three different ways.
Auto mode applies real-time pitch correction and lets VocalSynth drive the synthesis internally. MIDI mode lets you play pitch from a keyboard, which pretty much replicates the classic vocoder and talkbox experience.

My favorite one is the Sidechain mode, which routes your own audio as the carrier signal, which opens up some interesting possibilities for making non-vocal material react to a vocal input.
The plugin is super deep, so it takes some time to get a full feel for everything inside. But the interface is well-designed, and the large preset library is a good starting point for exploring what it can do.
It’s also worth noting that a free copy of Cluster Delay by Minimal Audio is included with the purchase this month.
VocalSynth 2 runs on macOS Big Sur (11.7) through macOS Ventura (13.5) with native Apple Silicon support, and Windows 10 and 11, all 64-bit only. Supported formats are AU (Mac only), VST3, and AAX.
