Now I’m guessing you’re probably most interested in hearing about the 100 bucks IK Multimedia delay.
IK Multimedia dropped Tape Echo all the way back in April 2013 as a “faithful recreation” of the Echoplex EP-3 tape delay.
The Echoplex EP-3 was originally released in 1970 and was the first solid-state Echoplex in the series. The EP-3 became a classic, beloved by guitarists for its warm sound, and became the longest-running Echoplex, being manufactured until 1991.
IK Multimedia replicated the imperfections and signature sound of the EP-3 for their Tape Echo plugin, including tape hiss, wear, flutter, and AC line hum.
It can be used as a standard tape delay, or you can use wow, flutter, preamp gain, and tape wear to deliver more striking effects.
Tape Echo has a minimalist interface that you’d expect from an emulation of a unit from 1970.
While the plugin is 12 years old at this point, the classic sound and vibe it’s going after doesn’t go out of style, so there’s plenty to love here.
Cherry Audio’s Stardust 201 Tape Echo is a “hot-rodded interpretation” of classic tape echo units from the ‘70s and ‘80s. The plugin dropped on October 1, 2022.

Cherry Audio replicated the limited fidelity of the tape audio tape, along with the natural rolloff of the bass and treble frequencies to deliver a warm tonality and small speed variances, producing an organic, chorusing tone to the repeats.
By running the intensity knob hot, you can overload the circuit and deliver the signature other-worldly echoes and feedback that tape is known for.
The unit includes features from Roland’s RE-201 and RE-301 echo units, and Cherry Audio added their own features to add some further sounds and flexibility.
