Parallel Aggressor is a parallel processing plugin that combines compression and saturation in a streamlined interface.
It splits your audio into three parallel signals: Dry (your original signal), Spank (a heavily compressed duplicate), and Heat (a heavily saturated duplicate). You blend all three together to add punch and weight to your tracks.
I use parallel compression and saturation a lot, both in mixing and especially in sound design work. These are my go-to techniques for making cinematic sound effects sound larger and more impactful.
In classic Baby Audio fashion, Parallel Aggressor takes that concept and makes it simple without dumbing it down (on the contrary!).
What I love about it is that you can get a lot of different flavors from both the compression and saturation engines, and blend them together with the clean signal to dial in exactly the sound you want. You’re not limited to one compression style or one saturation type.
The Spank engine is an adaptive compression algorithm that builds on Baby Audio’s earlier I Heart NY plugin. It has four style buttons: Extra Punch (shapes transients for a punchier feel), Extra Smack (more aggressive compression behavior), Sidechain Filter (preserves the low end), and Mono.
The Heat engine is an analog-modeled saturation algorithm based on Baby Audio’s tape saturator from Super VHS, rewritten for this plugin. Its style buttons include Extra Hot (a second, dirtier distortion algorithm), Tone (adds mid-range bite), and HP/LP filters for shaping the saturated signal.
Another cool feature is the Auto Gain function, which keeps the combined output roughly matched to the input level, so you can experiment with different internal balances without volume jumps. The plugin comes with 25 presets.
As always with Baby Audio, the interface is clean and easy to use.
You can quickly adjust the sound with super intuitive controls, and there are three color schemes to choose from. It’s an absolute breeze to use this for thickening bass, vocals, or any other track that needs a bit of parallel treatment.
Parallel Aggressor is available in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.7 or later, Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows (7 or later, 32/64-bit). An internet connection is required for activation.
