Bitwig Studio 8-Track is an entry-level digital audio workstation for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Bitwig describes the DAW as a sketch pad for musical ideas that features the workflow from its big bro Bitwig Studio.
Bitwig Studio 8-Track typically cannot be outright purchased, and is usually made available through inclusion on hardware bundles or in limited-time promos.
As the name suggests, Bitwig Studio 8-Track offers a similar experience to the paid Bitwig DAWs but is limited to eight audio/instrument hybrid tracks.
You can also use the DAW to run two effect tracks, two group tracks, eight scenes, and two VST plugins.
8-Track features 40 instruments which you can use on the aforementioned eight tracks, as well as 17 audio effects, 10 modulators, and the ability to control hardware units with MIDI and CV/Gate.
I think it’s safe to say the limitations on how many tracks you can use on Bitwig Studio 8-Track mean it’s not suitable for long-term use on anything but the most simple of projects, for example, voice work.
However, the current giveaway would be handy if you want to get a feel for the Bitwig workflow, or to get a discount on Bigwig’s paid DAWs using the upgrade path from 8-Track.
Bitwig’s lineup of paid DAWs features Studio Essentials ($99), Studio Producer ($199), and Studio ($399).
If you snap up the current freebie license for 8-Track, then you will be able to upgrade to any of the above three DAWS for the somewhat lower prices of $79, $169, and $359.
All three of the paid Bigwig DAWs offer unlimited audio and instrument tracks.
The two most expensive DAWs also offer extra features such as more instruments and effects, more modulation options, and a bigger library of sounds.
