Galaxy Tape Echo is an impressive plugin recreation of the iconic Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape delay and spring reverb unit.
Roland’s Space Echo has been a favorite of forward-thinking artists, such as Pink Floyd and David Bowie, since its release in 1974. As a keyboardist, pairing the RE-201 with a Fender Rhodes or Roland Juno-60 is a dream combination.
Multiple developers have taken on the challenge of recreating the RE-201 and its eleven modes, but my favorites come from Universal Audio and Arturia, and if you can get either cheap, it’s always a good deal.
The RE-201 covers a wide range of effects, from simple delay and reverb to authentic analog-like saturation, wow and flutter, and otherworldly pitch-shifting.
The essence of the original Space Echo is likely different things to different people; for some, it’s the haunting spring reverb, while for others, it’s the self-oscillation that can easily lead any sound astray.
Galaxy Tape Echo is an excellent addition to your plugin library, whether you’re after something subtle and authentic or experimental textures.
Some developers added a distinct twist to their emulations, like Arturia’s Delay Tape-201 having stereo Repeat Rate dials, but Universal Audio has stayed true to the original in every way possible.
You don’t need a physical iLok dongle to activate Galaxy Tape Echo unless you want to activate it offline.
You do need a free iLok account to register the plugin via iLok Cloud.
Galaxy Tape Echo is available in AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.15 and higher) and Windows (10 or 11).
