A gangster in hiding confessed to ordering Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder in a BBC interview, citing revenge and gang rivalries.
A well-known gangster has admitted to orchestrating the 2022 killing of Sidhu Moose Wala in Punjab during a rare interview with the BBC, revealing revenge and gang rivalries as the motive behind the high-profile murder that stunned India’s Hip-Hop scene.
Speaking through voice notes to BBC Eye, Goldy Brar said he ordered the hit on Moose Wala because the rapper was “involved in the murder of our brother Vicky Middukhera.”
Brar believed to be hiding in Canada, claimed Moose Wala’s circle played a role in the 2021 slaying of Vicky Middukhera, a close associate of fellow gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
The rapper, whose real name was Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, was ambushed and gunned down in his SUV near his village in Punjab on a Sunday in May 2022.
Six shooters opened fire, riddling the vehicle with bullets. The attack was swift, brutal and left the 28-year-old artist dead at the scene.
Brar’s confession has reignited scrutiny over the dangerous overlap between Punjab’s booming music industry and its criminal underworld.
According to BBC News, Brar and Bishnoi believed Moose Wala was protecting Shaganpreet Singh, the rapper’s manager and friend, who was named in a police complaint in connection with Middukhera’s killing.
Singh fled to Australia and has not returned.
“We wanted him to face punishment for what he’d done. He should have been booked. He should have been jailed. But nobody listened to our plea. So we took it upon ourselves. When decency falls on deaf ears, it’s the gunshot that gets heard,” Brar said.
Journalist Jupinderjit Singh, who has covered Punjab’s gang conflicts for years, told the BBC that Moose Wala’s fame made him a target and that his huge following made him a threat to these gangsters.
“In his arrogance, he [Moose Wala] made some mistakes that could not be forgiven,” Brar told the BBC News. “We had no option but to kill him.”
The BBC report noted that Brar continues to operate from abroad despite being on Interpol’s wanted list, using encrypted apps and voice messages to communicate with his network.
