Eventide has released Temperance Lite, a free reverb plugin for macOS and Windows that takes an entirely new approach to shaping space and ambiance. You can download it now for free, but the offer only lasts until December 31st, 2025.
Instead of working like a standard algorithmic or convolution reverb, Temperance Lite introduces something Eventide calls Modal Reverb.
To understand how it works, imagine a room filled with thousands of tuning forks, each resonating at a different frequency. Temperance Lite lets you emphasize or reduce those resonances using the chromatic scale and, as a result, fully customize the reverb’s behavior.
In practice, that means you can decide which musical notes bloom inside your reverb tail and which ones fade away, giving you a level of musical control no other reverb currently offers.
At the center of this approach is the Temper Knob. When set to noon, Temperance Lite behaves like a traditional reverb.
But, turn it clockwise, and your chosen notes ring out more prominently within the space. Turn it counterclockwise, and those notes are softened while everything else takes over. I think it’s a super intuitive way to sculpt reverb in harmony with your track.
The plugin includes three main modal responses (Bright Room, Large Studio, and Synthetic Space), along with 15 presets covering everything from airy drones and chimes to vocal and drum spaces.
The NoteScape Visualizer shows which notes are sustaining or fading in real time, while a built-in spectrum analyzer and range sliders let you further focus on specific parts of the frequency spectrum.
I think this is where Temperance Lite feels genuinely new and innovative compared to the countless reverbs already out there. It doesn’t just simulate a space but also lets you musically tune that space.
If you’re working on lush pads, melodic synths, or even percussive loops, the ability to pick out which notes shimmer in the reverb tail opens some really creative sound design opportunities.
Other standard reverb controls are present too: Mix, Decay, Size, Pre-delay, and Output Level, along with options for adjusting the global tuning reference and fine-tuning in cents. Latency is under 1 ms, making it suitable for tracking and live performance as well.
Temperance Lite is available for free until December 31st, 2025. You’ll need to register the license by March 31st, 2026, and an iLok account is required (but no dongle).
The plugin runs on macOS (10.14+, Intel & Apple Silicon) and Windows (10+, x64), in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
