Desired Sounds has released Sonic Bass ONE, a free virtual bass guitar plugin for Windows and macOS.
The developer describes it as a synthesized electric bass, and after spending a bit of time with it, I’d say it sits somewhere between a realistic electric bass and a classic synth bass.
It’s punchy enough for electronic music, but still has a bit of that organic character you’d expect from a real bass guitar.
Sonic Bass ONE isn’t the kind of bass plugin I’d reach for in a serious mix, but it’s perfect for sketching out ideas quickly. If you want to jump straight into a new project without loading a massive multi-gigabyte sample library, this lightweight instrument is a great tool to have around and fire up in a hurry.
The interface is minimal, though it could be organized a bit better. Thankfully, there aren’t many controls to worry about.
You get Tone and Volume knobs, a polyphony mode selector (Legato, Mono, or Polyphonic), and an on-screen keyboard for quick sound checks. There’s also an Active LED that doubles as a MIDI panic button, and a few decorative touches like strings and pickups that add some visual charm.
The Tone knob lets you shape the top end. You can roll it back for a mellow R&B tone, or open it up for something more suitable for pop or disco.
Switching between Legato and Polyphonic modes can also change the instrument’s behavior quite dramatically, giving you anything from tight single-note basslines to overlapping tones (which I never really use for bass, though).
Sonic Bass ONE uses round-robin sampling for a more natural feel, though the overall vibe is still synthetic rather than purely realistic. In a mix, it sits surprisingly well, especially when enhanced with a touch of saturation or compression.
The plugin is available on a pay-what-you-want basis. You can get it completely free by entering $0 at checkout, or donate any amount to support the developer.
Once you’ve completed the checkout process, your browser will show instant download links for both macOS and Windows installers, along with a short PDF user guide. The ZIP download is only around 18 MB.
Sonic Bass ONE is available in VST and AU formats for Windows and macOS.
