DAWJunkie has released Lil’ Miss Doubler, a free artificial double-tracking (ADT) plugin designed to instantly thicken your vocals, guitars, or any mono source that needs a bit more width and presence.
Lil’ Miss Doubler is a simple doubling tool, in contrast to something like the Tape Double Track plugin from AIR Music Tech.
In this case, you get four controls: Delay, Pan, Intensity, and Mix. That’s it. There are no extras, just the essentials you need to create a simple doubled performance without tracking anything twice.
Delay sets the timing offset between the original and doubled signal, which is crucial for that classic ADT vibe. Pan lets you place the doubled voice in the stereo field, but keep in mind that it only works on stereo tracks.
The Intensity knob shapes the character by adjusting the pitch variation between the two signals. This creates that nice thickening effect that makes vocals feel fuller in a mix, but you should fine-tune it so that it doesn’t sound too artificial. And, of course, Mix lets you blend it all to taste.
I’m always happy when a developer keeps things lightweight and focused, and this one definitely follows that philosophy.
Lil’ Miss Doubler is extremely easy to dial in, and DAWJunkie kept the interface simple (and also resizable, which is always lovely). The “Upgrade” button in the corner doesn’t distract too much from using the free version.
In use, the effect works quite well. If you want gentle width on a lead vocal, use moderate intensity and around 25% mix. If you want a more obvious doubled layer on guitars or synths, crank the Intensity a bit, and it’ll get you there.
Overall, it reminds me of the old ADT plugin I used around ten years ago, back when I relied heavily on older 32-bit freeware before eventually moving to Waves’ ADT.
Of course, if you want something more feature-rich, Air Music Tech’s Tape Double Track (which we also covered last week) offers deeper control and a more polished look.
But honestly, the simplicity here can be an advantage in some scenarios. Sometimes you just want to drop a plugin on a track, turn a couple knobs, and be done.
Lil’ Miss Doubler is available now in VST and AU formats for macOS and Windows. You can download it for free from DAWJunkie’s website.
